Fear Not: You Will Be Able To Keep Your Me.com Email Address After MobileMe Sunsets

With MobileMe’s publicly-touted June 30 sunset date looming, talk amongst the many customers who use and rely on the service has now turned to whether or not the Cupertino company has plans to still support me.com email addresses after the service is discontinued.

Well, the answer is – Yes, you will be able to keep your me.com email address despite MobileMe’s imminent demise. This fact was first uncovered by the guys at TidBITS (via Macworld, MacRumors), who note that Apple’s iCloud transition guide highlights the options users will have once the service goes into its final phases of discontinuation.

As noted by the FAQ, the ability to keep ones email address at me.com has, in fact, been an option since the beginning of this month.

What if I just want to keep using my email on all my devices?

As of May 1, you can choose to keep using your mail after MobileMe ends, even on devices that don’t meet the iCloud system requirements.

To tell Apple that you wish to keep your address you simply have to head to me.com/move and “select the option to keep using your email after MobileMe ends.”

TidBITS has also posted a workaround for bypassing Apple’s automatic iCloud e-mail set-up, for those of you that may wish to continue using your me.com address, versus your iCloud address.

In Mail, after moving your address to iCloud, delete your existing MobileMe account: Choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, select your MobileMe account in the list on the left, and click the – (minus) button. Then click the + (plus) button to add a new account and fill in your mac.com or me.com address and password. But now hold down Option while clicking Continue. This bypasses Mail’s automated setup process (which would configure the account for the MobileMe servers — not what you want). On the next screen, choose IMAP from the Account Type pop-up menu. Enter imap.mail.me.com for the incoming mail server address, click Continue, and enter smtp.mail.me.com for the outgoing mail server address. Once you’ve completed the process, Mail in Snow Leopard should be able to check your iCloud mail both now and after MobileMe is turned off.

Once you have completed all of this, Apple says that your mail will continue to work on devices that don’t meet the iCloud requirements after MobileMe ends on June 30th, 2012.

A couple of decades ago the most advanced technology to appear in an average classroom was a mini-cassette recorder and a calculator. For most students, however, typical classroom technology ran the gamut from yellow legal pads to theme books, from pencils to ballpoints.

Computers were restricted to the computer lab. There, the green blinking DOS cursor would excite and intimidate. Most of the thrill of the computer lab, aside from a few basic computer games, came from the fact that you could type up a paper without using Wite-Out.

Bar Oasis 1.5 Released For Free For The iOS

The original Bar Oasis was a surprisingly solid iOS offering. It provided the novelty of ’serving’ drinks to an eclectic collection of characters, a well-drawn cast and a half-decent story line. For the most part, people had seemed rather enamored of it. With the sequel slowly progressing towards completion, Corner Studios decided to surprise its fans with an unexpected addition to its growing franchise. The free-to-download Bar Oasis 1.5 will apparently feature a brand new plot, familiar mechanics and a new .. game mode?

Visualize Available Memory On Your iPhone Or iPad With Disc Space [iOS Tips]

Yes, you can plug your iOS device into iTunes and get a bar graph of the space available, but what if you’re out and about and want to download something? How do you know at a quick glance how much space is left? Today’s tip shows you one way to do that.

Disc Space is a free app available from developer Dominic Rodemer. While his website is clearly not in English, the app is simple enough to figure out and use.

I grabbed the app from the App Store on my iPhone, but you can also get it from the iTunes Store on your computer. Once launched from your iPhone, Disc Space creates a nice 3D pie chart showing you the Used and Available memory on your device. It also computes percentage, for those of us that like to think that way, and shows the full memory Capacity of the device at the top. It matches the info I get with iTunes, so all is well.

Next time you’re out and about and wondering what’s up with your iPhone memory, perhaps Disc Space is your answer.

Apple Offers Free Copy Of Snow Leopard To MobileMe Users

Open to all those who use MobileMe and haven’t yet purchased Snow Leopard, Apple today began issuing mailshots to MobileMe customers informing them that they are entitled to a FREE copy of its desktop operating system, OS X Snow Leopard.

Macgasm reports that the move appears to be a new effort for Apple to ease the move to iCloud for these customers.

The move is particularly clever as iCloud only works with OS X Lion (or later). This means that, (although Apple is offering a FREE copy of Snow Leopard to these customers), each MobileMe customer who qualifies will still be required to purchase a copy of Lion from the Mac App Store for $29.99, to upgrade their system – essentially covering the lost revenue Apple would have made on selling copies of Snow Leopard.

To claim your FREE copy of Snow Leopard, simply head over to this page on me.com. From there, you’ll be asked to login and then re-enter your MobileMe account password for authentication reasons.

Once you’ve successfully filled out your mailing information, Apple will then issue OS X Snow Leopard to you on a DVD through the post, FREE of charge. Neat, eh?

Mob Up Against Giant New Enemies in Infinity Blade 2?s ClashMobs Update

Infinity Blade 2‘s first major content update has finally dropped on the App Store, bringing its new ClashMob feature to the game. The ClashMob challenges are asynchronous multiplayer events where everyone who participates contributes toward some collective goal. The early challenges include dealing as much damage to an enemy in 30 seconds as possible, or collecting a bunch of teleporting gold bags in a short amount of time. If the collective score of everyone in the challenge reaches a certain number, then everyone is given a lucrative award. There are multiple challenges added each day, and it’s possible to pre-register to get in to these upcoming challenges. Note that each challenge can only be played by players once.

Players are also encouraged to collect Game Center and Facebook friends who also have the game. Players get extra perks for having large numbers of friends in their mob, including additional rewards for successful challenges, and even the ability to repeat challenges a second time. Create Stop Motion Animations Easily With Jittergram

Once upon a time, when the internet was still a little unfriendly to newbies and everything was more complex to figure out, animated GIFs were all the rage and people would flock to fairly complicated animated GIF software in the hope that they could create something spectacular. It rarely worked well without investing a lot of time into the practice.

Now, we live in a world that offers the likes of Jittergram in a free and easy to use package, straight from an iOS device. A few taps of the screen and users can create a 3D stereogram or long stop motion animation via their iOS camera. The app shows the previous frame on top of the current camera view so it’s simple to line things up accurately.

The results are quick and easy to view, and pretty impressive with a steady hand and some practice. Once created, users can then share with their friends via Twitter or e-mail.

Best of all? Jittergram is completely free to use.

FREEday 3/2/12 – “FREE to Ignore the Bore of Authority”

Okay, so this turned out to be a rather large list. Best just skip the formalities and get right to the good stuff.

Arm Wrestling Evolution – AWE – We have every reason to love “extreme” boxing games. It’s like an instinctual thing. But take the general concept of over-the-top characters, an awesome art style, special moves, and combine it all with arm wrestling? That’s attention-grabbing on a whole new level. Also, my apologies for the pun. I swear it wasn’t intentional.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out – A city-building game featuring The Simpsons. Yeah, this totally won’t get a ton of attention. Still, I think it’s more than worth a mention. I mean we get to build our own Springfield. And interact with characters like Apu, Homer, Bart, etc. I can only imagine how many downloads it’s going to get.

Sky Settlers – Okay so it’s yet another city-building game (of a sort). That doesn’t mean it’s not without its charm. I mean, building a floating city in the sky is cool. And it’s got a nifty cartoon art style. Plus it’s free and all that.

RPS Rumble – Melding puzzle gameplay, Rocks, Paper, Scissors rules, and garish Luchador masks is so ridiculous it’s borderline genius. It’s not exactly bursting with free content, but what’s there is more than solid enough. And it can keep someone busy for quite a while depending on their personal skill level. Plus it’s goofy, and goofy is almost always cool.

R-Tech Commander: Galaxy XD – I know I’m a sucker for sci-fi stuff, but this one honestly looks pretty cool. RPG elements, strategy stuff, armada customization via ship classes and equipment, and a nifty visual style? Yeah, I’m totally sold. Which is even more cool because I don’t actually have to buy anything.

Zombie Panic in Wonderland – The bizarre WiiWare shmup has officially come to the App Store. And it’s free. I think paying absolutely nothing to blast through waves of disfigured Wonderland denizens as any of seven characters with multiple weapons to choose from is a sweet deal. I mean, who wouldn’t think that?

Idonia – So help me I love character customization. So the idea of setting up a 3-person team (with 5 classes to choose from), then finding and equipping them with special gear (lewt drops!!!), and powering them up with special skills is quite alluring. Of course it’s also got upgradable weapons and armor. And online PvP multiplayer. It’s also free, people.
